High praise for green heating project in Suffolk

A renewable heating project installed by us at the historic West Stow Anglo-Saxon site and visitor centre near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, has been shortlisted for six national awards. The ground source heat pump system we installed last year has enabled West Stow to cut its carbon emissions by 70% and created more welcoming facilities for visitors.

West Stow is a reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village which attracts visitors from schools, tourists and locals throughout the year. The new ground source heat pump replaces a poorly controlled, inefficient and expensive oil boiler and underfloor electric heating, to heat West Stow’s visitor centre, museum and café, as well as maintaining a steady temperature for its precious artefacts all year round.

Finn Geotherm’s installation at West Stow has just been announced for the sixth time as a finalist in a national award scheme. To date, it has been shortlisted in:

• The Energy Awards – Public building energy project
• BusinessGreen Leader Awards – Renewable Energy Project of the Year
• National ACR & Heat Pump Awards – Non-domestic ground source project
• RAC Cooling Awards – Building Energy Project of the Year
• Heating & Ventilation News Awards – Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) project under £0.5m
• Heating & Ventilating Review – HVAC Initiative of the year Category

Jill Korwin, strategic director at West Suffolk Council and Chair of Suffolk’s Climate Change, Environment and Energy Board, said:

“West Suffolk Council is working to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030 across all of its sites including the museum, visitor centre and café which serve the Anglo-Saxon village at West Stow. The site may be historic but working with Finn Geotherm, we have installed modern renewable heating in the form of a ground source heat pump. We are delighted with the huge impact it is having in terms of cutting carbon emissions and helping the environment and it is great to see this work recognised and shortlisted for six national awards.”
