Ground source heat pump keeps barn conversion cosy

A stunning Victorian barn conversion near Fakenham is using a ground source heat pump installed by Finn Geotherm to provide all its heating and hot water.

The property, which has four double bedrooms, was restructured by McNamara Property for owners Tim and Victoria in 2017. A former wheat barn, the building was completely renovated from top to bottom, including the installation of a new heating system.

Homeowner Tim explains:

“The barn had no heating whatsoever so we needed to install a system from scratch. Working with my builder, I spoke to Finn Geotherm and they recommended a ground source heat pump which would utilise the paddocks to provide our heating and hot water.”

Finn Geotherm installed a Lämpöässä VM17 ground source heat pump with a 900m collector loop laid in the grounds of the property. The installation was part-funded at the time by the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) – a government scheme to help support heat pump projects, which ended in March 2022.

With several winters in his new home, Tim sums up:

“The ground source heat pump works really well, providing all the heating we need to keep cosy and the hot water is a lovely temperature.”

CO2 savings:

Since its installation in 2017, Tim and Victoria’s heat pump has saved approximately 47.4 tonnes of CO2.
