2023 – a hot year for heat pumps!

The latest report from the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), the organisation which provides certification services for renewable energy solutions, has found a record number of heat pumps were installed in the UK during 2023.

According to figures just published, the number of heat pump installations increased by almost 20%, with over 35,000 air source heat pumps and ground source heat pump installations registered with the body last year. The total number of certified heat pumps installations in the UK registered with MCS since 2008 has now exceeded 200,000 systems.

The boost in installations is thought to have been triggered in part by the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), which offers £7,500 towards the cost of a domestic heat pump installation.

Guy Ransom, commercial director at Finn Geotherm, commented:

“It is fantastic to see these latest figures from MCS which show more and more buildings in the UK are now using heat pumps for their heating and hot water, while also capitalising on BUS funding to help with their projects. While we still have a long way to go to meet our Net Zero obligations, this shows we’re heading in the right direction.”
